The scientific name for Head lice is Pediculosis and it is caused by parasites which are approximately the size of a grain of rice. A common misconception is that head lice are the same as pubic lice or body lice. This is not true.

It is estimated that 1 in 10 children will become infected with head lice during their school years. Children are at a higher risk of being infected with head lice due to the regular close contact made with other children.
It is important to accept, as  mentioned earlier, that head lice can effect anyone, especially those who are regularly in close contact with people who are already infected. The sharing of hair implements such as combs, brushes and hair clips can also make you a higher risk. There is a common belief that due to the temperature made with hair straighteners, that they don’t provide the opportunity to infect someone else with head lice. However, as it has not been proven correct or incorrect, it is best to assume that any hair implement which can be shared between people may always carry the risk of head lice. Even items such as pillowcases, towels, scarfs etc can carry head lice from one head to another.

The best way to ensure that any infestation is not spread is to follow a couple of simple rules. Firstly, don’t share implements with people who are infected with head lice, secondly, if you suspect you may have head lice, regular brushing and combing with a steel comb will remove some of the lice – not all – and thirdly, regular use of special shampoo’s or home remedies can help treat the infected head.

It is important to note, that quite often, prevention is better than cure. If you are able to prevent a head louse infestation by following certain rules, then you may never get infected. However, as mentioned earlier, head lice are a common ailment, more than some people think, and ultimately, if you are infected with head lice, then to treat the infestation as soon as possible.

Cases of head lice are on the rise and treatments are being rendered ineffective due to increased drug resistance. It’s more likely than ever that your child will be afflicted: what you need to know to be prepared.

My original working title for this article was going to be "Lice: They’re Not Just For Dirty People Anymore!", but I thought that that title might strike some readers (Barbara Robinson’s Herdman children, for example) as offensive. It does, however, address one of the more common historic beliefs about lice: that people living in unsanitary, and often poor, conditions were more likely to be afflicted than those in shiny, clean, more affluent neighborhoods. In fact, it was often thought, they were the only ones responsible for spreading the varmints around.

Who can forget the shocked reactions of poor Fee and Padraic Cleary, the parents of the central character, Meggie, in Colleen McCullough’s novel, The Thorn Birds, upon finding lice in their little girl’s hair? "’…filthy lot of flaming pigs! [said Padraic]…when I think of [her] giving her lice to Meggie, I could go into Wahine and tear the whole filthy greasy caf down!’ he exploded." As you can see, references to cleanliness being an issue in the spread of lice are not uncommon.

For years now, the perception has been that lice is something that only happens to other (dirtier) people, but with 6-12 million cases of lice expected to strike U.S. schools this year, it is apparent that lice infestations will strike households of all levels of cleanliness; in fact, some researchers believe that lice actually prefer cleaner hair, because it makes it easier for them to attach to the hair shaft (an argument many children will try to use to their advantage when it comes to bath time).

So if it is not cleanliness (at least, not cleanliness alone) that is responsible for sudden outbreaks across the country, then what is causing them? Any parent who has ever received a "lice letter" from their child’s school can answer that: sharing combs, brushes, or hair accessories; sharing hats (and that includes things you might not think of immediately, like batting or riding helmets); sleepovers (can you hear the wail of outraged tweens everwhere?); circle or story time; riding on the bus, etc. Because lice do not fly or jump (they have to crawl), anything that involves head-to-head contact puts your child at risk.

If that sounds like pretty much every activity in which your child may be currently engaged, you’re right. But children have always engaged in these activities, so why do there appear to be so many more outbreaks now than in the past? Researchers have some theories, one of which is that with more children with both parents working outside the home, more children are in group-care situations than in years past, providing more opportunities for lice to spread from one child to another.

Another theory, more scientific than social in nature, has to do with a growing resistance among lice to the prevailing treatments of the day. One of the more common ingredients in lice-treatment shampoos and kits, permethrin, has been shown to be ineffective in 50 to 90% of cases in a recent study. That drug-resistance makes it harder to stop an infestation on one child from turning into a school-wide epidemic.

The social stigma associated with a child having lice does not help matters, either. Parents are desperate to avoid other children who are rumored to have lice (though it doesn’t seem to affect their children’s interest in playdates at all) and, if their own child is found to be afflicted, it can be mortifying for those parents. Some may ignore the problem completely, or even try to hide it. Complicating matters is the long gestational period for the eggs to hatch into nymphs and then into adult lice: many experts put the "incubation period" at anywhere from ten days up to two weeks; that means you may not see anything moving around on your child’s head for nine days, and think you’re home free, but then see your worst nightmare crawling across your daughter’s forehead on the tenth day.

So what can a fearful parent do? First, check your child regularly. If you’re not sure what to look for, ask your pediatrician or a school nurse they would be far happier to help you do preventative checks than to have to help you figure out how to get rid of the little buggers. Second, pay attention to letters that come home from your child’s school. Sometimes schools will only send letters home to the parents of one particular class, but if you hear about another class at your child’s school being infested, begin regular checks of your child’s head. Third, never, ever, even in the absence of an active outbreak in your child’s world, let them share anything that allows for head-to-head contact, not even for a minute. Fourth, there are some products out there that claim to be lice-repellent, for example, products containing tea tree oil or lavender (there are a number of shampoos, conditioners, etc. that are available), and for those products, there is some good anecdotal evidence of their efficacy, but do not, under any circumstances, use lice treatment products on your child in the absence of a verified infestation. The active ingredients in most of the treatments are pesticides and highly toxic; unnecessary use or overuse of them is harmful to children and is what is being blamed for lice’s increasing resistance to them. Fifth, after sleepovers, birthday parties, etc., wash your child’s clothing/linens in the hottest water possible and dry them on a high setting for 20-25 minutes. Anything that can’t be dried, seal in a plastic bag for several days. If your child is invited to a sleepover, have the courtesy to do a thorough check of your child beforehand, and if you suspect there may be an infestation, do not send your child.

Lastly, if the moment should come when you discover the dreaded things on your child, vacuum, bag, wash, comb, nitpick, inspect, repeat; vacuum, bag, wash, comb, nitpick, inspect, repeat, and try to keep your composure. Yes, lice are nasty, yes, it is grueling and time-consuming and irritating to deal with an infestation, but with the numbers increasing every year, chances are very good that your child will be faced with an outbreak at some point, along with most of the children on your street. Whether you’re rich or poor, a neat freak or a laissez-faire housekeeper, lice are coming, and they’re hungry; be vigilant to make sure your child is not their next meal.

In the past century, tremendous strides in medical research have cured most deadly childhood diseases. No one ever hears of a child dying from mumps, measles, or polio, yet every child still gets the cold. Another common ailment that has not been defeated is head lice.

The human louse, a small bug that lives on human blood, causes head lice. Similar in nature to bugs that infect animals like fleas and ticks, the louse can live only on humans and is only able to hang on to places with hair, thus we see lice on humans most commonly as pubic lice and head lice.
The behavior of children, rather than how clean or dirty they are, is one of the reasons they are so susceptible to lice. Sharing toys and hats, where lice can temporarily shelter, is common for children. Once the item comes into contact with hair, the lice move onto the hair of their new host. Also, the high density of children at schools for example, means an increase in opportunities for direct transmission of lice. Adults usually receive much greater personal space in their day-to-day lives.
Just like common cold, lice can be easily treated and is a minor annoyance. There are many delousing shampoos available in the market. The shampoos on the regular application for few days kill the lice and prevent the eggs from hatching. You also have to comb the hair with a fine- tooth comb to remove lice eggs.
Many insects that feed off of blood, such as mosquitoes, are known for being carriers of disease. Lice are different. While they do make your scalp itch, lice are not known to carry blood-born diseases. Lice pose virtually no threat when it comes to transmitting viral infections.
We are aware of the fact that itching caused by lice is a major annoyance. Therefore, we take many pains to rid ourselves free of lice. In crèches and play schools, children are no longer allowed to lie down together on mats for a quick nap. Instead, they are encouraged to keep certain distance from each other while sleeping. Sometimes, they are made to take a nap with their heads on the desks. Parents advice their children not to share hats and other toys which can come in direct contact with their hair in order to avoid lice.
No matter what we do, head lice manage to infect children because we are not able to change the way they interact with each other. However, we can drastically reduce the chances of lice infestation with modern sanitation, regular hair cleaning and simple treatments. Head lice will cease to remain a nuisance if we take mighty efforts to eradicate them completely, the way we eradicated smallpox.

One of the most common parasites to be found on our body is the head lice (Pediculus capitis). We are its humble hosts on whom these parasitical insects thrive.

These are found mainly on the scalp which also happens to find its way on your neck and face. The six shaft like legs grasps the hair for better movement. Home Remedies for Lice

In your regular shampoo mix 3 tablespoon olive oil, 1 teaspoon tea tree oil and 1 teaspoon eucalyptus oil. Apply this solution and cover your head tightly with a plastic bag for half an hour and then rinse it off. This can be used as a remedy to fight off these invaders.

After washing your hair apply mayonnaise all over your scalp. Keep it overnight by covering it. Rinse it the next morning and remove the lice with the help of a lice comb. The lice would slide through your hair with ease.

Apply Vaseline freely on your scalp to suffocate and remove the lice. It may be tiring affair as Vaseline is not that easy to remove. Before washing you can apply corn flour to make the process easy.

Make a concoction by mixing 20 drops each of eucalyptus essential oil and tea tree oil, 10 drops each of aniseed essential oil and lemon oil with 75ml olive oil. Apply this on your hair and leave it for an hour. Later, wash it to get positive results.

You can rub Listerine Antiseptic Mouthwash on your scalp. It may happen to kill the lice due to the presence of essential oils like eucalyptol, thymol, menthol and methyl salicylate and alcohol.

You can make a solution of baby oil or any other mineral oil with equal proportion of vinegar. Apply this on your hair. Once doused with this solution cover your hair for one hour before shampooing it. This may help in reducing the lice due to the inbound properties of vinegar and the oil.

It doesn’t matter if your treatment option of choice is over the counter insecticide products, drug store shampoo, insecticide based store shampoo, prescription shampoos or a more natural option, nit removal is simply good insurance against another outbreak.

While nit combs take awhile to use especially on longer hair, this is a good way to verify that all bugs have been removed. Even the latest in lice home remedies usually suggest this as good insurance just to make sure everything has been removed.

The lice home remedies work better at least emotionally when you know and can see that the bugs have all been removed. While actually being able to see that all the lice, nits and nymphs are gone is a big emotional benefit, not seeing them doesn’t mean your home is free from the problem. You will also need to continue to be on the lookout for several weeks just to be certain that a re-infestation doesn’t occur.

There really is no excuse to allow the life of head lice to continue in your homes and on your body for more then a few weeks if you are truly doing the necessary work that is required to make it all go away.

Now that you have medication in hand, there are still plenty of other things that need taken care of. There is a lot of cleaning and storing of certain items in your home that you must do. Washing and drying (with heat) the pillowcases, sheets, nightclothes, towels and stuffed animals may possibly eliminate lice and eggs that might otherwise reinfest a family member. Combs, brushes, hats and other hair accessories in contact with an infested person should be washed in hot water each day to dislodge any lice and nits. And in order to take stop the entire head lice life cycle, you must look through the hair on a daily basis to remove any and all eggs that you find. Because the way the head lice life cycle works, you may find that this process in itself will take about two or three weeks before you stop finding eggs.

Introduction
Head lice are highly adaptable creatures and a very common problem, second only to the common cold among communicable diseases affecting school children. Getting head lice isn’t a sign of bad personal hygiene or an unclean living environment. This itchy
infestation, also called pediculosis capitis, most commonly spreads through close personal contact and by sharing personal belongings.

How common are they?
Head lice are very common. In primary schools in the UK, probably one child in ten is infected every year. Young children tend toput their heads together, with friends or other family members, and lice are easily spread from person to person.
This problem has got worse recently, and head lice are much more common then they used to be.

How are head lice spread?
Anyone can get head lice. Having head lice does not mean a person is unclean.
Head lice are commonly spread among children and adults who may stay close together in one place, such as in child care settings and schools. Head lice cannot jump or fly from one person to another.
Although less likely, head lice can also be spread by children sharing hats, combs, hairbrushes or headphones.

Who is at risk of getting head lice?
Anyone can get head lice, but they are more common among school-aged children. Head lice spread more easily among children 3 to 12 years of age because they share their belongings more often than adults and play close together.

It’s not true that people get head lice because they’re dirty. Head lice are very contagious.

Diagnosis of Head Lice
In addition to having the symptoms listed above, children with head lice will have gray or reddish brown live head lice scurrying around their scalp. Lice are small, about the size of a sesame seed, and although they don’t fly or hop, they can crawl very fast, making them hard to spot.

Causes
The cause is a tiny insect which lives on the scalp, and feeds by sucking blood through the skin. The head louse grips on to the hair with its six tiny claws.
The female lays its eggs (nits) in sacs which are glued to a hair. These take seven to ten days to hatch. The lice then take seven to fourteen days to become mature and ready to reproduce. The total numbers of lice thus rise very quickly.

What is the treatment for head lice infestation?
Getting rid of head lice requires treating the individual, the family, and the household.
Treat the individual and the family — This requires using an over-the-counter or prescription lice- killing medicine. Treat only persons who are infested. Remember that all lice-killing products are pesticides. Follow these treatment steps:

Remove all clothing.
Apply lice-killing medicine, also called pediculicide [peh-DICK-you-luh-side], according to label instructions. If the affected person has extra-long hair, you may need to use a second bottle.

Head Lice Life Cycle
The life cycle of the head louse has three stages: nit, nymph, and adult. The life cycle of a single louse from egg to egg is about 1 month.
Nits: Head lice eggs are called nits. Nits are laid by the adult female louse and are attached to the base of the hair shaft by strong cement. They are located close to the scalp because they require body heat for incubation.
